Want to know right away when something important is happening in Washington County? The county’s Emergency Alert Program, AlertWashington, can send updates straight to your phone, per Washington County Emergency Management.
What the alerts cover
Washington County Emergency Management says AlertWashington lets the county share critical information quickly in situations such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods. The county also uses it for other important community news.
How you get them
You choose where messages go. According to the county’s sign-up page, alerts can reach your home, mobile or business phones, email and text messages. As the page puts it, “You pick where, you pick how.” You can add your address so the system knows your location, and you can stop alerts at any time by removing your contact information from your profile.
Why now is a good time
The Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30, and cold snaps and winter storms can follow close behind. Signing up now means you will already be on the list the next time weather or a road closure affects your part of the county.
How to sign up
- Tap the “Sign Up for Alerts” button on this page to open the AlertWashington sign-up page.
- Choose “Sign Up” and create an account with a username and password.
- Enter your address, then add at least one way to reach you, such as a text number, cell phone or email.
- Accept the terms and tap “Create Account.”
The sign-up page notes that message and data rates may apply for text alerts. You can also reach AlertWashington from the “Get Emergency Alerts” link on the Washington County Board of County Commissioners website.
It only takes a few minutes, and it could make a big difference for your family and neighbors. Share this with someone who should be signed up too.
