Tall, feathery cream-white goldenrod plants in bloom in afternoon sun beside a river

October Flower and Woody Goldenrod Brighten Washington County’s Sandhills This Fall

Spotted little white clouds of blooms in sunny, sandy spots lately? That’s likely October Flower, a Florida native that blooms from late summer into October.

Julie McConnell with UF/IFAS Extension Washington County in Chipley shared a few of her favorite tough sandhill plants this month, and October Flower is one of them.

Two natives to look for

  • October Flower: white blooms in sunny, sandy spots from late summer into October. It even makes a nice cut flower that can last a week or more.
  • Woody Goldenrod: covered in tiny yellow flowers in the fall.

Good for pollinators

Both plants bring in native bees and butterflies, making them a welcome sight along sandy roadsides and yards around the county.
